Gabe Shuford
Harpsichord, Guitar and Piano

Gabe started playing the guitar first, learning to play the stride-picking method of Leo Kottke and Mississippi John Hurt. He started playing the piano in high school, and studied classical music in college. He loved to play pop music and jazz, recording in his early years with several groups in those genres.

Gabe came to the State University of New York at Stony Brook to study classical piano, and earned his Master's degree before deciding, after being drawn into the improvisatory nature of baroque harpsichord, to earn another Master's degree in harpsichord performance. He is now working towards his Doctorate in the Musical Arts in Early Music at SUNY Stony Brook under Arthur Haas.

Gabe is an expert baroque ornamentalist, and adept continuo player, well respected among his colleagues. And he moonlights as a jazz piano player, playing with ensembles around the New York City area. The ideas have, by now, cross-contaminated one another so much that Gabe is an adept jazz, Celtic, back-woods bluegrass and baroque harpsichordist and pianist with a tender touch.
